Using Selftests to know problem in phone
I often see some threads explaining Contact Service Solution etc. in this forum. Intention behind this thread is to provide information about understanding where the problem is actually and to rectify this.
First of all, it is very important to know why we see Contact Service in Nokia Phones.
Every phone has some tests at its startup. Not only phone, but all devices with Firmware inside use some tests to make sure that everything is fine and it can work flawlessly.
These startup tests have different natures. Some are Necessary and some are Auxiliary.
Necessary Tests - If any of these tests are failed, correct use of device is not guaranteed. In such case, execution of software will be halted and you will see Contact Service on screen.
Auxiliary Tests - These tests may help you to see if any additional or rising problem is there. But device may work even if any of Auxiliary Test is failed.
Now I think users may have got idea about Contact Service. Lets see how to determine what is causing this Situation.
Have a look to following image:
In above picture, look at the Start Up Test column. You may see that some are Yes, Yes (Aux) and No.
Test stated as Yes is startup test. Failing any of them will cause Contact Service. Tests with Yes (Aux) should not cause Contact Service but inform you about partial problems. I don't think I need to describe test stated No as startup.
How to know which is Software Problem and which one is Hardware:
ST_WARRANTY_TEST, ST_SIMLOCK_TEST, ST_PPM_VALIDITY_TEST, and ST_SECURITY_TEST are common test which fail for Software Problem.
These problems could be solved by Flashing and Unlocking (Init Simlock in DCT4).
If you see ST_LCD_TEST failed, then either your LCD is damaged or LCD connecter is Damaged. In short, if phone is unable to get info about LCD, then you will see LCD Test as Failed. You may also check in second picture attached to this post below.
All other tests are related to Hardware. Information about them will be made available in this thread later.
You may often see people telling you about Full Erase, Write PM etc. But not in every case, you need to write pm to phone. To know, whether you need to write PM, look the picture below:
In above picture, I have a Info Log of my 2630. Look at first red box. If you find any of these entries empty, then you need to write PM to phone. Otherwise, you may encounter Network problem and others in phone.
In LCD Type filed, you should see LCD Name. But if you see UNKNOWN or UNKWN etc. written there, then you have LCD problem.
If you SL Conf field filled with FFFFFFFF then you must unlock your phone.
Hope this post will help you.
